Fresh off his starring role in the ABC limited series “Secrets and Lies,” Ryan Phillippe has been tapped to star in the USA Network drama pilot “Shooter,” based on the 2007 Mark Wahlberg pic.
With Phillippe signing on, USA has given a formal pilot order to the project from Paramount TV and Universal Cable Prods. “Shooter,” inspired by the Stephen Hunter novel “Point of Impact,” revolves around an ex-Marine sniper, Bob Lee Swagger, who is recruited to thwart a presidential assassination but winds up framed for the crime.
Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson, Lorenzo di Bonaventura are exec producing. John Hlavin wrote the pilot and is exec producing. Simon Cellan Jones (“Ballers”) is on board to direct.
“I love the character of Bob Lee Swagger and we are thrilled to have Ryan on board for the show,” said Wahlberg.
“Shooter” is one of five drama pilots ordered for 2016 consideration at USA.

UKTV has announced that it has secured exclusive UK pay TV rights to the thriller, which also stars Juliette Lewis.
“Secrets and Lies is an ambitious series combining crime, deception and the unpicking of numerous characters’ lives,” said Watch general manager Steve North.
“It is a gripping show that will enthral our audience and keep them on the edge of their seats.”
Secrets and Lies stars Phillippe as Ben Crawford, who finds his neighbour’s son dead on his morning run.
However, he becomes a prime suspect as Detective Andrea Cornell (Lewis) searches his home and demands a DNA sample from him.
Ben’s life is turned upside-down as he struggles to escape from the pressure of the media – all while trying to prove his innocence.
Secrets and Lies will be broadcast in September.
It airs on ABC in the US and has been renewed for a second season.
